Featuring Parbati Chaudhury Kathak
Pancham – Swati Dance Company (Premiere)
Two showcase performances of Indian classical dance featuring the solo Kathak dance form, in the first half, and then
Bharatnatyam ensemble work in the second. Kathak is an ancient dance form characterised by dazzling footwork, complex rhythms and graceful flowing movements, a style often traced back as the source of the flamenco tradition. Parbati is the winner of the 2015 Yuva Nritya Ratna Award (Young Dancer of the Year), a national award that identifies her as one of the best young dancers in England.
Swati Dance Company’s Pancham is a new production commissioned by Milapfest and stars young dancers of the North West, choreography by Harikrishnan and Swati Raut. With music produced especially for the performance, Swati Dance Company explores the concept of Pancham, the idea of five beats or rhythm patterns of five.
