Milapfest and The Capstone Theatre present Sonia Sabri Company: Jugni

Inspired by honest stories of celebration and hardship from women from all over the world, Jugni (meaning female firefly) is an explosion of Kathak dance and music. With soaring live vocals and powerful contemporary choreography, Sonia Sabri Comapny have built a heartfelt and powerful work that is soul stirring and beautiful.

Jugni (meaning female firefly in Sufi poetry and Punjabi folk music) is an explosion of dance and music with soaring live vocals and percussion inspired by Qawaali, and powerful contemporary choreography driven by the passion in folkloric dance styles. Choreographer Sonia Sabri and Musical Director Sarvar Sabri build a heartfelt collaboration of a predominantly female cast of renowned artists making Jugni one of the most inspirational dance shows of the year.

SSCo has secured a reputation for collaboration across dance styles and art forms, exploring ways of reinventing the Kathak performance through innovative or non-traditional use of music, theatre design and choreography. Collaborators have included choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, theatre designer Jacqueline Gunn, lighting designers Charles Balfour and Helen Cain, director Jatinder Verma, dramaturge Rose English, digital designer John – Marc Gowans, percussionist Hossam Ramzy, composer Ryoji Ikeda, urban Bhangra music group Tiger Style and many others.

To date, the company has staged five tours to national and international venues with Parallels (2008-9), Nisbat (2007), Red (2005-6), Rekha(2003) and Drishti (2002). The company’s new project, Kathakbox, explores the relationship between Kathak and urban culture.

“Jugni is a masterpiece as it celebrates the emancipation of women in today’s world”. Nottingham Post
