In Chennai to Columbo, enjoy the singing talents of Dr. Deepti Omchery Bhalla. Unlike the Hindustani vocal tradition which is largely based on improvisation, the South Indian Carnatic vocal tradition is more structured in its approach and is generally centered around a repertoire of compositions. Dr. Deepti Omchery Bhalla, a highly acclaimed performer and scholar of Carnatic music, presents a stunning and much-loved collection of South Indian compositions. Deepti is equally accomplished in Carnatic vocal and the Mohiniattam form of dance, which she’ll also present later in the festival.
The musical journey through South India continues with the incomparable violin maestro Lalgudi GJR Krishnan, accompanied by one of the leading figures in South Indian percussion, Patri Satish Kumar. A torch bearer of the incredible Lalgudi bani or style of playing, Krishnan presents beautiful improvised ragas and compositions that are loved the world over, made famous by his father and guru, the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman. Krishnan is a composer, soloist and collaborator of international fame, and is loved for his ability to translate the Indian vocal style through his instrument. Accompanied by mridangam, this is a special occasion that will take you back to the superb pulsating Chennai concert atmosphere.
