The development of Indian violin & vocal music & composition in the 20th century owes a lot to the massive contributions of Lalgudi G Jayaraman & his family. This maestro artist set a trend for composition & performance, & much like Pandit Ravi Shankar in Hindustani Music, added a huge body of work to Carnatic Music & became synonymous with the genre. His legacy is carried forward today by his son & daughter, the brilliant duo Lalgudi GJR Krishnan & Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, who are world renowned leaders in their field, & draw from the rich ‘Lalgudi bani’ repertoire. Carnatic instrumental music is based on a rich repertoire of compositions that are devotional, tell stories, & feature both improvisation & fixed passages. The music has complex rhythm patterns & brilliant ensemble interaction. The duo are joined by two masters of percussion, mridangist Patri Satish Kumar & tabla player Kousic Sen.
