INDIKA 2017: Odissi Ensemble & Vaishali Trivedi

25 Jul 2017 | 7:30pm until 9:30pm

The Capstone Theatre, Liverpool

In a special two-part concert, Odissi Ensemble and Vaishali Trivedi take to the stage to showcase some of the most beautiful classical Indian dance styles.

Part One – Odissi Ensemble, Gods & Mortals

Kadam Pulse presents the Odissi Ensemble in Gods and Mortals, an evening of powerful and moving dance to soulful music. For the first time, UK based musicians join the dancers to bring you classical dance with the freshness and spontaneity that only live music can provide. Elena Catalano, Katie Ryan, Maryam Shakiba and Kali Chandrasegaram make up the quartet of dancers with accompanying musicians Ranjana Ghatak (vocals), Parvati Rajamani (spoken rhythms), Gurdain Rayatt (percussion) and May Robertson (violin).

Renowned for its sculpturesque form and sensuous grace, odissi entrances with its crystalline geometry and powerful narrative. The stories of the gods are metaphors for humans with their everyday struggles and occasional triumphs. The specially arranged choreography of the Ensemble’s presentation keeps the classical form updated for the twenty-first century.

Part Two – Vaishali Trivedi

Vaishali Trivedi has emerged as a Kathak dancer with a distinct style. She is a pioneer in contemporary Kathak and breathes new life into the art form, whilst remaining grounded in tradition.

Vaishali will be performing two pieces. The first is inspired by the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and his life. The piece attempts to portrait human forms to convey beauty and grace, without its mythological context. The second is based upon the Sufi culture, which is a “science of the heart”. It is an attempt at seeing and also seeing oneself.
