As part of our Sgt Pepper at 50 celebrations, Rakesh Chaurasia and Anil Srinivasan launched their new album, Melodies on the Mersey, which takes its inspiration from the uniquely musical city of Liverpool.
In an intuitive collaboration of gorgeous depth and sensitivity, Anil Srinivasan and Rakesh Chaurasia stretch the boundaries of their instruments and Indian musical backgrounds in a tribute to a city they have grown to love.
Milapfest first brought together pianist Anil Srinivasan and bansuri flautist Rakesh Chaurasia together for live performances on tour in Engand, and as composers and tutors for Samyo, MIlapfest’s National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music. Working in Liverpool, they were moved by the city’s rich musical heritage, its vibrant spirit, and distinctive architecture.
The album romanticises the city, reflecting the conflict between inner and outer peace and the concept of ‘duty’; ‘Melody on the Mersey’, an original composition, was inspired by the Liverpool’s river and historic waterfront.
