Music for the Mind and Soul: Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, Pandit Ronu Majumdar & Kousic Sen
Free Admission
Milapfest’s Music for the Mind and Soul concert series continues with its Jugalbandi theme with a special performance by accomplished Santoor artist Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and world famous Bansuri flautist Pandit Ronu Majumdar. They will be accompanied by Tabla maestro Kousic Sen.
Tarun Bhattacharya has been called “a master of one hundred strings.” One of the most influential players of the santoor, India’s hammered dulcimer-like instrument, Bhattacharya has continued to expand on the instrument’s capabilities. In addition to adding an extra string, whose pitch can be varied by finger pressure, Bhattacharya has incorporated meend, an expressive sliding style of ornamentation.
Grammy Award nominee, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, is a major innovator in New Age music who brings an almost transcendental quality to his Bansuri flute playing. He is a force to reckon with in the realm of Indian classical music both as a thinking musician and a scintillating performer.
Bhattacharya and Majumdar recorded the album Essence of Jugalbandi (1993) together and collaborated with Grammy Award winning musician Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on the album Song of Nature (1992). They have performed extensively together.
Bhattacharya and Majumdar will be accompanied by Milapfest’s Artist in Residence, tabla maestro Kousic Sen, an expert in accompaniment and duets in a wide variety of musical styles.
