a revolutionary orchestra reaches a landmark…
Orchestras aren’t commonplace in Indian classical music – but the UK is home to a groundbreaking orchestra, and the only one of its kind in the world.
SAMYO is the National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music and this year celebrates 10 years since a group of young British-born musicians first came together to redefine a genre, to create an entirely new sound in Indian music.
In this special anniversary concert, SAMYO10, the orchestra traces its decade-long journey exploring its roots in traditional raga music to more contemporary repertoire featuring bold themes and experimental cross-genre collaborations. The programme features a special guest appearance by the National Youth Jazz Collective, and a brand new arrangement of a Western Classical piece, along with a selection of works by some of India’s most famous contemporary composers – all of which have been especially composed and arranged for the orchestra.
Working with the SAMYO over a number of years, world-renowned contemporary classical musicians including Lalgudi GJR Krishnan, Gaurav Mazumdar and Ranajit Sengupta and have contributed a series of compositions which have challenged and ignited the orchestra as it continues to surprise, push boundaries and experiment – always playing Indian music as never heard before.
