Indika: Light on the Path

Indika: Light on the Path

Featuring legendary dancing couple, The Dhananjayans, alongside Indian classical pianist Anil Srinivasan and Carnatic vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan, this live music and dance collaboration is a highlight of this year’s festival.

The coming together of these brilliant artists is significant at many levels. Bharatanatyam, an ancient traditional dance, accompanied by the piano, a new entrant onto the Indian music scene, is a groundbreaking concept. ‘Light on the Path’ creates a vocabulary of its own – at once ancient and new, dynamic and meditative.

Maestros Padmabhushan V P and Shanta Dhananjayan are amongst the senior most exponents of Bharatanatyam, as well as a respected Gurus and thought leaders. Anil and Sikkil created a revolution in the world of Indian classical sound when they brought the Western classical piano into the ancient poetry of Carnatic music, creating a new style of presentation that has now become the forerunner for many such collaborations since.

Light on the Path is symbolic of new directions in the combined vocabularies of classical music and dance from India.
