In Fond Memory of Kumudini Lakhia (1930–2025)

We are sorry to hear of the passing of the extraordinary Kumudini Lakhia in Ahmedabad at the age of 95. Kumudini ji was celebrated worldwide first as a pioneering solo Kathak performer who passionately took Indian artistic culture to global audiences. She later transitioned into teaching and choreography, becoming a revered guru and inspiration for countless leading artists across the world. The Hindu describes her legacy, stating she “stirred the dance world with her pathbreaking approach,” significantly reshaping Kathak and inspiring future generations.

Kumiben was an integral part of Milap’s Dance India programme, contributing her wisdom, creativity, and energy at multiple editions over 15 years in both the UK (at The Lowry and Liverpool Hope University) and Asia Pacific (The Goodman Arts Centre and Esplanade Singapore). Her commitment and high standards helped nurture and inspire many young and emerging artists who have since become accomplished professionals.

Our CEO & Artistic Director, Alok Nayak, reflects:

“I loved spending time with Kumiben at Dance India in the UK and Singapore. She had incredible stories—from her global tours with Pt Birju Maharaj to humorous and enlightening experiences she encountered along the way. In her teaching, she was uncompromising in maintaining excellence, consistently challenging norms through her choreography and empowering dancers to forge their unique paths. We will miss her captivating stories, inspiring conversations, and the rich learning experiences she generously offered. Kumiben, we will never forget you.”

Photographer Himanshu Pahad  captured beautiful moments of Kumiben during Dance India in 2008, shared here, and he also remembers her warmly, highlighting her dedication to dance and teaching, ensuring its continued appreciation.

Our thoughts, love, and condolences go out to her family, friends, students, and all who were touched by her remarkable life.
