AGATHI – Plight of the Refugees

AGATHI – Plight of the Refugees

Sunday 17th June 2018, 7pm

Capstone Theatre, Liverpool

“When things fall apart, the children of the land scurry and scatter like birds escaping a burning sky… they will never be the same again.”

AGATHI, the new dance-theatre production by Apsaras Arts, Singapore, explores the contemporary issues, including prejudice and misunderstanding, surrounding the plight of refugees all over the world. Through music, poetry and Bharatanatyam, AGATHI paints an intimate portrait of their lives and struggles, exploring their emotions and examining the stigma that people forced out their countries have to endure.

Drawing inspiration from the company’s artistic director Aravinth Kumarasamy’s personal experiences as a refugee many years ago, and featuring a music score based on the poetry of well-known Tamil poets Kavimani Desiga Vinayagam Pillai, Maha Kavi Subramania Bharathi and Kaviarasu Kannadasan, as well as translations by Niranjan Bharathi of poems from the UN Refugee Agency’s A Book of Poems: Expressions from our Youth, AGATHI brings about much needed awareness and appreciation of these inspirational tales of struggle, perseverance and hope.

Come peer into their lives and bear witness to their stories.
