Gunghroo

What are the Ghungro?

Gunghroo comprises of several small metallic bells that are strung together and tied around the feet of dancers in order to accentuate and complement the rhythmic aspects of dance.

Ghunghroos are used in folk music, bhajans and abhangs to add layers to the rhythm.

Ghungroos were traditionally strung together on a thick cloth string. The more popular way of arranging them is to place them on a velvet patch of cloth so as to make it more comfortable for the dancers. When used in music only, ghunghroos are arranged on a stick or a disc and given varying amounts of resonance to produce different sounds.
