DAY 9 | SABRANG

Welcome to Day Nine of ‘12 Days of Milap’. Today, we turn our attention to the last of our wonderful ensembles, SABRANG.

SABRANG is the UK’s National Choir for Indian Music – a distinctive vocal ensemble bringing together some of the country’s most accomplished young singers. Founded by Milap in 2016, it was created to offer vocalists an opportunity to be part of an innovative tradition of Indian choral music, supported by a unique and exclusive repertoire.

Indian choral music remains relatively rare, and SABRANG was established to address this gap by providing vocalists with a platform that recognises and supports their artistic potential. The ensemble creates a shared space where singers can learn, collaborate and perform together, with their artistry supported and showcased through performances and recordings. While aligned with the ambition of Milap’s orchestral ensemble, SABRANG is uniquely tailored to nurture vocal practice and meet the needs of vocalists.

SABRANG’s repertoire is diverse and expressive, combining traditional Indian music and contemporary compositions. Programmes draw on classical ragas, folk traditions, and modern arrangements, often telling stories, celebrating cultural heritage, and honouring legendary artists. This range encourages vocal versatility and creates performances that are engaging for both singers and audiences, shaped by tradition and informed by global influences.

Members of SABRANG work closely with leading vocal coaches and conductors, benefitting from focused training, masterclasses and rehearsals. Through this process, singers are supported in developing various different vocal techniques, harmonisation, musicality and performance skills. Ensemble singing lies at the heart of the experience, offering valuable professional insight and a strong foundation for future artistic pathways.

At its heart, SABRANG reflects a spirit of innovation rooted in tradition. By reimagining choral practice within Indian classical music, the ensemble continues to explore new possibilities for how Indian vocal music can sound, pushing the boundaries of the genre.
