We’ve reached Day Seven of our ‘12 Days of Milap’ and today’s instalment reflects on Milap’s National Indian Arts Awards (NIAA) – an initiative dedicated to recognising excellence, leadership and legacy within Indian Classical Arts in the UK.

The National Indian Arts Awards is a UK-based annual event established by Milap to honour outstanding artists, teachers, pioneers and emerging talent shaping Indian Classical Arts in the UK.
Launched during Milap’s 30th Anniversary year in 2015, the NIAA was created to address the need for greater recognition and visibility for those working at the highest levels of artistic and cultural contribution to Indian Arts. At its core, the awards celebrate individuals whose commitment and dedication ensures Indian Arts continues to thrive across the country.

Over the years, award ceremonies have been hosted in prestigious venues, including London’s Southbank Centre, and have featured performances from world-class artists. The NIIA serve not only as moments of recognition, but also as a platform that elevates Indian Classical Arts within the wider arts sector – bringing together artists, audiences, educators and communities in shared appreciation.
The NIAA honours dedication, discipline, artistic excellence and community contribution. Past recipients include some of the UK’s most influential practitioners, alongside exceptional international artists and arts professionals whose impact has resonated both nationally and globally. Each award reflects a different facet of contribution, recognising both lifetime achievement and future potential…

National Indian Arts Awards Categories include:
Tarang / Samyo Musician of the Year – celebrating emerging talent in Milap’s Ensembles
Vishwa Kala Ratna – honouring international legendary figures
Guru Ratna – recognising lifetime achievement and distinguished teachers
Kala Ratna – celebrating significant artistic contributions
Sangeet / Nritya Acharya Ratna – acknowledging distinguished music and dance teachers
Yuva Ratna – recognising outstanding young musicians and dancers of the year
At its heart, the National Indian Arts Awards is all about recognition, respect and visibility. By celebrating excellence at every stage of an artist’s journey, the NIAA gives back to the community that shapes Indian Classical Arts and sends a powerful message to the wider arts sector and to young people: Indian arts are valued and celebrated.
