DAY 6 | TARANG

Welcome to Day Six of ‘12 Days of Milap’ – we’ve reached the halfway mark! Today, we’ll be spotlighting the remarkable work of TARANG.

TARANG is the UK’s National Ensemble for Indian Music: an intensive artists’ development programme that facilitates the musical growth of students into fully-fledged performers, and an acclaimed, distinctive ensemble with an impressive catalogue of performances and releases.

Founded by Milap in 2004, TARANG was created in response to a critical gap in Indian classical music development. Many young musicians were stopping the practice of their Indian classical instruments at the age of 18, due to lack of clear progression routes and limited visibility of professional opportunities. TARANG was designed to bridge this gap – supporting musicians as they move from early training, development and tuition into professional careers, and providing a space where ensemble members can continue, aspire and grow.

From the outset, TARANG developed a distinctive classical sound by blending North and South Indian music traditions with other genres, including jazz, Western classical and folk. TARANG’s fusion of tradition and modernity broadens musical horizons and has introduced a new way of experiencing Indian classical music.

Through Milap, TARANG members create original work, release albums, collaborate with world-class mentors and experiment creatively within their instruments. We are also proud to have provided members with amazing opportunities to perform on major UK stages alongside legendary composers and artistic leaders.

Through TARANG, Milap created a path where none existed – a holistic development platform encompassing musical, creative and professional pathways for Indian classical musicians aged 18 and above.
