Launched in 2013, the Yuva Ratna Awards were created to recognize the most talented young artists performing Indian music and dance in the UK through an open national competition.  In 2014 the winners were Uma Venkataraman, who won the Yuva Nritya Ratna Award for dance, and Nilanjana De, winner of the Yuva Sangeet Ratna award for music.

Both Nilanjana and Uma present a selection of compositions and choreographies which highlight the depth, beauty, emotion and artistic intricacies of Hindustani Vocal and Bharatanatyam respectively.

Nilanjana began her training with her father at a young age, and has since learnt from a number of highly respected Gurus and teachers. She has performed regularly on All India Radio, and at large scale concerts in India. Nilanjana now lives in the UK where she has performed in local and national venues. In this concert, she performs a programme of Classical Hindustani pieces accompanied by Rekesh Chauhan on Harmonium and world renowned maestro Kousic Sen on tabla.

Uma Venkataraman  Bharatanatyam

Uma is a student of Srimati Pushkala Gopal in London, UK. Her initial enthusiasm for Bharatanatyam has developed over the years into a passion that continues to take her on a deeply spiritual journey.  She has had the opportunity to learn with world class gurus like Professor Chandrasekhar, the Dhananjayans, Srimati Leela Samson and Srimati Priyadarsini Govind at Milapfest’s ‘Dance India’ summer school in the UK. Uma is currently studying Medicine at Imperial College, London. Despite her academic endeavors, Bharatanatyam remains an essential and central part of Uma’s life.
