Just over a decade ago, our founding director dreamed of a future for Indian music in Britain which supported young musicians and allowed them to flourish.
He saw talented young musicians reaching an artificial ceiling which did not allow them to progress, and decided it was time to create a platform for performance, training and educational opportunities. With the support of Youth Music, SAMYO was born with the idea to give young musicians the chance to nurture their talent and confidence, learn from the best teachers of Indian music, and explore a long-term career in Indian music.
Current SAMYO member, Raam Jaganathan, tells us how he feels the orchestra is contributing to his development:
“I think SAMYO is helping greatly with my development as a young musician. There are so many different instruments and so many different styles in the orchestra and its wonderful to be learning about them all. It improves my knowledge as well as my musical skills. Since joining SAMYO, I have improved to be performing far more regularly than I did before I joined. I’m sure SAMYO will turn me into a young professional artist with enough ability to perform worldwide” – Raam Jaganathan, SAMYO member.
This year, we’re celebrating SAMYO’s 10 year anniversary celebrations with the launch of a new documentary film about the orchestra, and a celebratory concert in London.
We’d like to ask our friends and supporters of SAMYO to help us to share the music and stories of our young people with as wide an audience as possible, through our SAMYO10k Challenge Fund, the documentary film, and the Anniversary Concert. As the only National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music in the world, we believe this is a story that should be told widely!
SAMYO10k Challenge Fund
With your help we can offer young people music scholarships and other financial support to purchase instruments. This can open doors for those wishing to pursue a professional career in music.
You can make a donation today through our SAMYO10k Challenge Fund Page on Just Giving HERE. Securing funds will help us plan ahead effectively for further rehearsal and training day activities throughout the year. It will also help us provide a consistent musical development programme for our young budding artistes.
