Spotlight on Kousic Sen: Milap’s Artist in Residence

From the vibrant musical roots of Kolkata to the creative energy of Liverpool, Kousic Sen’s journey as a tabla player is a compelling story of tradition, innovation, and global collaboration. Born into a musical family and a proud representative of the Banaras Gharana, Kousic carries forward one of India’s richest rhythmic legacies with passion and virtuosity.

Kousic’s performances are known for their intensity and energy, bringing fresh life to traditional tabla playing. His mastery of rhythm has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious venues, performing alongside leading musicians and dancers across India, Europe, North America, and Asia. Alongside his deep roots in Indian classical music, Kousic actively collaborates with artists from diverse musical traditions—from Western and Cuban to Indonesian and Persian—creating exciting new musical dialogues.

As a key part of Milap’s story—celebrating 40 years of championing Indian arts—Kousic’s long-standing involvement has been integral to our growth and impact. He is not only a remarkable performing artist but also percussion conductor for our national youth orchestra, Samyo, and tabla teacher at our arts school. His commitment and artistry continue to inspire generations of musicians and audiences alike.

“The tabla is not just an instrument, it’s a conversation—between the musician, the rhythm, and the audience. Keeping those rhythms alive means constantly exploring new ways to communicate and connect.”
