Introduction to Carnatic Music (Workshop)

Following the University of Liverpool’s Lunchtime Concert, the artists will be leading a free workshop, introducing participants to Carnatic music.

Wednesday 17th October 2018, 2:30pm

Carnatic music has a long tradition which has developed in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Today’s performers will introduce the concepts of Ragam (Raga): the seven note scale with its melodic restrictions and compulsions, and Thalam (Tala): the rhythmic foundation of the Carnatic music. Workshop participants are welcome to observe or bring instruments.
