The National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music presents an evening of uplifting and inspirational music with a wide ranging repertoire. Samyo’s own distinctive genre is both recognisable and unfamiliar, as it breaks new ground with the work of contemporary composers, and performs adventurous arrangements based on a rich musical tradition.
Milapfest’s annual showcase performance by Samyo illustrates the transitional journey that the orchestra takes each year, re-inventing and re-shaping the Indian music genre in an orchestral context. Following the 10th anniversary celebration in 2013, the orchestra has established a strong identity, defined by talented young musicians, an array of instruments including sitar, veena, flute, violin, tabla and mridangam.
Indian classical music is a solo, improvised tradition, but Samyo performs the work and arrangements of modern Indian composers, inspired by the best folk, popular and classical traditions of India; the young musicians of Samyo, born and raised in England, have helped to shape the only orchestra of its kind in the world.
