Rani Natalie Rout     Odissi

Milapfest presents Timeless, a stunning showcase of young British dancers, each bringing a fresh perspective to the ancient classical dance forms of India. Timeless gives a platform to both the artist and the art form, offering an insight into the future of Indian dance in the UK.

Rani Natalie Rout is an extremely talented and ambitious young Odissi dancer based in the UK. Originally trained in Bharatanatyam, Natalie found her calling in Odissi while attending a course under Padmashree Madhavi Mudgal at the Dance India international summer school in the UK.  Natalie has received two Milapfest scholarships giving her an opportunity to train with Guru Ratikant Mohapatra and Guru Sujata Mohapatra respectively. At the Odissi International dance festival in 2012 held in India, Natalie was named as one of the ‘Top Ten Odissi Talents’ and has been invited to perform at several international dance festivals in autumn 2013. Natalie has a degree in medicine from Cambridge University, and is currently undertaking her clinical medicine training in London.

For Timeless, she performs an interesting mix of traditional and contemporary Odissi pieces, some of which have been choreographed by herself.

“Natalie Rout danced with complete involvement striking sculpturesque poses in nritta, a pallavi. With her natural beauty and youth she drew attention of senior dancers.” – Dr Sunil Kothari

Apoorva Jayaraman is a rising star amongst the next generation of dancers in India. Trained under world renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Priyadarsini Govind, Apoorva gave her first solo dance performance at the age of 8. Since then her focus has expanded into choreography and teaching, which she does in India, USA and the UK. Apoorva has explored her flair for choreography in recent years by creating several group works, each presenting Bharatanatyam in a fresh context that aims to appeal to an international audience.  Apoorva is presently studying for a PhD in Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. She is also an astrophysicist, having completed her Masters in Physics from Oxford University (Trinity College).

Apoorva will be performing a selection of pieces choreographed by Priyadarsini Govind, which combine new ideas in choreography with original interpretation giving the repertoire a fresh and unique feel.  The pieces explore a vast array of themes and emotions, celebrating the distinctive personality of Bharatanatyam itself.

“Apoorva has an extraordinary feel for movement and melody .Combined with her keen focus and commitment she is a dancer to watch.” Priyadarsini Govind
