The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is one of the world’s leading
dance examinations boards. The Society was formed in 1904 to support the
dance sector and to establish a standardised examination system. Now, the ISTD
has more than 7,500 members in more than 75 countries and facilitates 250,000
dance examinations globally each year. It hosts 12 different faculties covering
the full spectrum of dance, from Classical Ballet and Modern to Tap and Greek,
including Kathak and Bharatanatyam.

The South Asian Faculty was set up in 1999 to examine in Bharatanatyam and
Kathak, the two classical South Asian dance genres most frequently taught in the
UK. The UK examining started in 2001, with expansion into Europe, Canada, the
US and Dubai, along with ongoing enquiries from Australasia, South Africa, India
and Pakistan.
